SETI Capacity Building Kicks Off: Empowering Industries to Advance Energy Transition and Achieve Net Zero

Jakarta, September 19, 2025 – The Sustainable Energy Transition in Indonesia (SETI) officially launched its capacity building series with the inaugural training titled “Industrial Capacity Building for Decarbonization”. This activity was realized through cooperation between the German Federal Government and the Indonesian Government to realize a more environmentally friendly and low-carbon energy transition. Organized by Greenwise in collaboration with WRI Indonesia and GIZ, the event was held at the DoubleTree Hotel in Jakarta and marked the beginning of four training sessions that will continue into the following year.

Cross-Sector and Government Participation

The training session brought together 99 participants, with 60 attending onsite and 39 joining online. This represents more than 35 cross industries companies including chemicals, pulp & paper, steel, cement, food & beverages, textiles, automotive, and footwear.

In addition to private sector representatives, officials from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (Kementerian ESDM) and the Ministry of Industry – Centre of Green Industry (Kementerian Perindustrian – Pusat Industri Hijau) were also in attendance. Their presence highlighted the government’s strong commitment to supporting industries in transitioning toward a low-carbon economy.

Energy Efficiency and Renewables as Key Priorities

The event opened with remarks from Dr. Ir. Hendra Iswahyudi, M.Si., Director of Energy Conservation at the Directorate General of New, Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources. He emphasized the critical role of efficiency and renewable energy in Indonesia’s energy transition. “Energy efficiency and the adoption of renewable energy are no longer optional. They have become top priorities backed by a clear legal framework,” said Hendra Iswahyudi.

Meanwhile, Dr. rer. nat. Johannes Anhorn, Project Coordinator of SETI-GIZ, highlighted the importance of strategic approaches in industry decarbonization. He stressed that companies must first understand where emissions occur, and then adopt both advanced technologies and simple measures to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and strengthen the global competitiveness of Indonesian products.

Training Objectives and Content

The training was designed to equip industries with practical strategies for advancing the energy transition and achieving net zero emissions. Participants explored methods to identify energy use in their facilities, develop greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories, map emission hotspots, and implement internationally recognized energy management systems.

Led by experienced trainers Hesli Oktavia and Wiratmojo Sakti Nugroho, the sessions covered topics such as industrial decarbonization strategies, GHG accounting with the GHG Protocol, and practical approaches to applying energy management systems within industrial operations.

An Interactive Learning Approach

To deepen participants’ understanding, the training combined lectures with hands-on exercises. Attendees completed emission calculation worksheets, assessed energy use, and engaged in collaborative group activities such as an educational game on matching Scope 3 emission sources. These interactive methods were designed to connect theory with real-world applications that can be implemented within companies.

Participants demonstrating outstanding engagement were also recognized, underscoring the importance of active contribution to the learning process.

Insights from Participants

Industry representatives shared positive reflections on the training. Abdillah noted that the sessions provided new insights into energy management, particularly in setting targets and baselines.

“This training reassures us that our company is on the right track in reducing emissions, even though policy and financial challenges remain,” said Priyanto from PT Frisian Flag Indonesia.

A representative from PT MC Pet highlighted the program’s value for industry players, while suggesting that future sessions delve deeper into the material to ensure comprehensive understanding across all sectors.

Next Steps

This session serves as a continuation from the first session and lays a more strategic foundation for the next two capacity building series, which will address technological exploration for the energy transition, feasibility for green technology projects, and preparation for the management transition for low-carbon technologies.

With the support of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Ministry of Industry, GIZ Indonesia, WRI Indonesia, Yayasan Indonesia Cerah, and Greenwise as the capacity building partner, the SETI Capacity Building program is expected to enhance industry capacity, accelerate the transition to a low-carbon economy, and contribute to Indonesia’s target of achieving net zero emissions by 2060,
